What is Hazardous Waste

What is Hazardous Waste

Every once in a while, we need to get rid of hazardous waste. Hazardous waste is often produced at construction sites and other commercial sites and disposing of it can be somewhat of a problem. In fact, many professional rubbish removers also do not cater to this type of waste.

Here, at 4 Waste Walk-In Skip Bins, we are one such company who does not accept hazardous waste in our skip bins. You can use our skip bins to dispose garden waste and mixed household waste, but not for hazardous waste.

Today, I will tell you more about what hazardous waste is, so you know how to deal with it. So, continue reading this post to discover just what this type of waste is so that you don’t face problems with it.

What is hazardous waste?

Any waste that is harmful or potentially dangerous to the environment or human health is classified as hazardous waste. Materials that are classified as potentially dangerous include explosives, flammable materials, toxic and poisonous materials and infectious substances, among others. Some types of clinical waste used oils and e-waste, are also considered to be hazardous, even if they may not display potentially dangerous characteristics.

Characteristics of hazardous waste

Waste material can be characterised as hazardous waste if it exhibits one of four characteristics. These include ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity and toxicity.

Ignitability refers to how easily an item can combust or can create fire. Corrosivity refers to materials with a pH less than or equal to 2.0 or greater than or equal to 12.5. Reactivity refers to the ability of materials to decompose or react with other substances readily. Finally, toxicity refers to harmful or fatal items if ingested or absorbed.

If waste exhibits any of these characteristics, it is safe to classify the waste as hazardous.

How to deal with hazardous waste

You cannot use normal methods of waste disposal to deal with hazardous waste. Such waste cannot be placed into skip bins either. At 4 Waste Walk-In Skip Bins, we absolutely prohibit the dumping of hazardous materials into our skips. If you do so, your waste will not be collected and will be left at your premises.

This holds true for most other skip bin providers and professional rubbish removers in Brisbane. However, there are certain service providers who will handle hazardous waste for you.

Do some research to find out what type of waste you have on hand. Once you’re sure of the waste you need to dispose of, you can look for professional rubbish removers who deal with hazardous waste. Depending on the amount and type of waste you have on hand, you should find professional waste removers with little effort.

Just remember that disposing of hazardous waste is not possible with skip bins in Brisbane. For any other type of junk waste, garden waste or mixed waste, you can always hire one of our skip bins here at 4 Waste Walk-In Skip Bins. However, in addition to hazardous waste, we also don’t accept heavy construction waste in our skip bins. Apart from these two categories of waste, our skip bins are perfect for disposing of all other types of waste.

Conclusion:

Hazardous waste is a special type of waste that cannot be disposed of using conventional methods. Any waste potentially harmful to the environment can be classified as hazardous, provided it exhibits one of four characteristics. These include ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity and toxicity. You cannot use skip bins to dispose of this type of waste material. Fortunately, some professional rubbish removers in Brisbane will handle this type of waste for you.
